Benefits of Gravimetric Blender Application

In plastic processing, do you struggle with inconsistent formulation ratios, high masterbatch consumption, or fluctuating batch quality? Most of these problems originate at the raw material mixing step.

Below is a detailed guide on how a gravimetric blender works, its core working principle, key advantages, and industrial applications.

Gravimetric blender doses multiple raw materials based on actual weight. It works for plastic pellets, regrind, color masterbatch and similar materials. During operation, each material is individually dosed by valves and screws and weighed separately before being fed into the mixing chamber for homogenization.

Volumetric vs. Gravimetric Blender

Volumetric Blender: Doses materials based on time or volume. It offers a lower initial cost but limited accuracy. Dosing errors rise sharply when material bulk density fluctuates.

Gravimetric blender: Doses materials based on actual weight, delivering higher batch consistency. It can be integrated into the lines to combine dosing and conveying in one unit.

Gravimetric Blender Working Principle

A gravimetric blender operates using a sequential gain-in-weight (GIW) and loss-in-weight (LIW) measurement method.

Core Components:

  • Material Hoppers: Store virgin resin, regrind, color masterbatch and other ingredients.
  • Screws & Discharge Valves: Control the sequential feeding of each ingredient. Major ingredients are controlled by pneumatic valves, while minor ingredients (like masterbatch) are metered by high-precision auger screws.
  • Weighing Chamber: High-precision weight measurement for materials dispensed by screws and valves, ensuring accurate ratios.
  • Mixing Chamber: Homogenizes all weighed ingredients for uniform dispersion.
  • Control System: Stores multiple recipes and governs the entire batching process.

Step-by-Step Working Flow:

  • Feeding: A vacuum loader transports virgin resin and masterbatch into their respective hoppers.
  • Sequential Dosing: Raw materials are dosed sequentially into the weighing chamber. Valves open for major materials, while precision screws rotate for minor additives.
  • Weight Measurement: As materials enter the weighing chamber, high-precision load cells measure the actual weight in real time.
  • Discharge & Homogenization: Once the precise target weight is reached, the discharge valve opens, releasing the batch into the mixing chamber for thorough homogenization.
  • Continuous Cycle: The weighing chamber immediately begins the next batching cycle, while the mixed material is transferred to a storage hopper or downstream machine.

Key Advantages of Mconvey Gravimetric Blender

1. High Dosing Accuracy (±0.1%):

Combines gain-in-weight and loss-in-weight dosing to achieve ±0.1% accuracy, maintaining stable performance even at high output.

2. Raw Material Savings

Eliminates over-dosing and cuts material loss, with cost benefits for masterbatch and additive applications.

3. Complete Batch Traceability

Features Ethernet connectivity for centralized monitoring. It logs real-time weight records, recipe IDs, and alarms for quality control and compliance audits.

4. Consistent Batch Quality:

Performance is unaffected by bulk density fluctuations or variable material flow, delivering uniform blends batch after batch.

5.Compatibility with Complex Recipes

Modular construction with configurable hopper combinations. Reliable operation for multi-material formulations, materials with large density differences and high-precision requirements.

Applications

  • Plastic Extrusion Lines: Production of plastic film, pipe, profile, and sheet.
  • Injection Molding: Precise dosing of color masterbatch, additives, and virgin resin.
  • Recycled Material Compounding: Accurate blending of regrind with virgin resin.
  • Masterbatch Dosing: Strict pigment and color formulation control.
  • Others Industries: Food, pharmaceutical, chemical and other requiring accurate blending control.

Note: In plastic recycling, gravimetric blenders are often used with downstream equipment to ensure consistent material preparation before reprocessing.
